AI Safety Is Becoming Marketing’s New Brand Safety Fight



As more ad dollars flow through AI-powered systems, marketers are asking a sharper question: not just where ads appear, but how AI is shaping the entire customer journey.


For years, marketers obsessed over brand safety in the old sense of the term. They worried about ads appearing next to hate speech, extremism, or low-quality content. That battle has not disappeared, but it is no longer the whole battlefield. A newer fight is taking shape across the industry: AI safety. The concern is broader, murkier, and in some ways more consequential.


Marketers now want to know how AI systems are creating ads, placing them, optimizing bids, shaping audience targeting, and influencing what customers actually see before they buy. Business Insider reported this week that major advertisers and agency leaders are pressing platforms such as Google and Meta for more transparency around AI-driven ad auctions, revenue impact, customer acquisition, and brand equity.



That shift makes sense. Modern marketing is no longer simply a contest of creative ideas and media budgets. It is increasingly a contest of system visibility. If AI tools are writing copy, assembling creative variants, selecting audiences, and reallocating spend in real time, then the central risk is not just adjacency to bad content. It is surrendering too much decision-making to systems marketers cannot fully inspect. The old brand safety debate asked, “Will my ad show up in the wrong place?” The new one asks, “What exactly is the machine doing with my money?”



This is happening at a moment when ad spending is still rising, which makes the stakes higher. The IAB’s 2026 outlook forecast U.S. ad spend growth of 9.5% this year, with especially strong gains in social media, connected TV, and commerce media. Those are exactly the environments where automation, AI-driven optimization, and opaque platform logic are becoming more central to campaign performance. In other words, marketers are not debating AI from the sidelines. They are increasing spend while asking tougher questions about the plumbing underneath it.


That creates a peculiar tension. Marketers want the efficiency. They want the scale. They want the promise that AI can improve attribution, accelerate testing, and squeeze more performance out of the same budget. The IAB’s State of Data 2026 report makes clear that AI is becoming a major force in attribution, incrementality testing, and marketing mix modeling. But the same trend also raises a problem that every experienced operator recognizes: when a system gets more powerful and less explainable at the same time, trust starts to wobble.


The trust issue is not theoretical anymore. Industry groups are already trying to formalize what disclosure should look like. In January, the IAB released an AI Transparency and Disclosure Framework intended to help brands, agencies, publishers, and platforms decide when AI use in advertising should be disclosed and how to handle that disclosure without turning every campaign into legal wallpaper. That framework exists because the industry can see the storm front coming. Once synthetic media, generative creative, and AI optimization become ordinary parts of campaign execution, disclosure stops being a nice ethical accessory and starts looking like basic operating hygiene.


Regulators are edging into the picture too. Reuters reported that New York enacted legislation requiring disclosure when AI-generated synthetic performers are used in ads targeted at New York audiences, with the law taking effect on June 9, 2026. That does not solve the broader transparency problem in media buying, but it does signal where things are going. When lawmakers begin with synthetic performers, they are not really finishing there. They are planting a flag around consumer deception, authenticity, and the commercial use of generated likenesses. Marketing leaders should read that as an early tremor, not a one-off oddity.


There is also a cultural layer to all of this. Consumers are getting tired of what some executives have started calling AI “slop,” the endless tide of cheap, synthetic content that looks polished at a glance and hollow on contact. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that some brands are now using “No AI” disclaimers in their marketing to emphasize authenticity and reassure skeptical audiences. That is a remarkable development. It suggests that in at least some categories, avoiding AI in outward-facing creative is becoming a brand signal in itself. The industry spent years selling automation as magic dust. Now some brands are marketing their distance from it.


That does not mean AI is bad for marketing. It means the lazy version is bad for marketing.


Used well, AI can help small teams punch above their weight. It can speed up research, generate creative variations, improve testing velocity, and surface patterns in performance data that humans would miss. For sales and marketing teams with limited budgets, that can be rocket fuel. But the value comes from disciplined use, not blind dependence. The difference is huge. One approach uses AI as an assistant inside a clear human strategy. The other uses AI as a velvet curtain behind which nobody can explain why spend moved, why leads got worse, or why the brand voice suddenly sounds like a committee of caffeinated interns.


That is why this moment matters so much for CMOs and revenue leaders. The smartest teams will stop treating AI as a feature and start treating it as infrastructure that requires governance. They will demand clearer reporting from platforms, document where AI is used in creative and media workflows, decide where disclosure is necessary, and keep a human hand on the wheel for message quality and customer trust.


They will also get much more serious about first-party data, because in a market flooded with synthetic sameness, real customer understanding becomes a sharper advantage. The broader Reuters commentary on AI accountability warned that public disclosure of AI principles has been slowing, even as pressure for oversight rises. That gap between adoption and transparency is where future trouble tends to breed.


For sales teams, the lesson is equally practical. Every marketing system eventually lands in the pipeline. If AI-generated campaigns produce cheaper clicks but weaker intent, sales feels the bruise first. If synthetic personalization makes outreach sound generic, trust decays before the first meeting. If AI optimization favors what is easy to measure rather than what actually builds demand, revenue teams end up feasting on vanity and starving on real opportunity. The new AI safety debate is not just for ad buyers in glass towers. It is a frontline issue for anyone whose quota depends on the quality of demand coming in.


The next phase of marketing will not be defined by whether companies use AI. That argument is already yesterday’s lunch. It will be defined by which companies can use AI without becoming unreadable, untrustworthy, or strategically lazy. The winners will not be the loudest adopters. They will be the operators who can answer simple questions with clean, confident clarity: Where did the spend go? Why did the system make that choice? Was the content real? Did it help the customer? Did it help the business?


That is the real safety test now. Not whether AI can make marketing faster, but whether it can make it faster without making it flimsy.
