Appointed in June 2023, Yaccarino came from a high-powered role as head of advertising at NBCUniversal, where she was known for her corporate polish and deal-making acumen.


Elon Musk tapped her to rebuild advertiser trust and give the platform a shot at credibility after his own erratic leadership drove many major brands away.

From the beginning, it was a strange pairing. Musk, with his chaotic flair for online provocation, memes, and restructuring-by-fire style, clashed almost immediately with Yaccarino’s advertiser-first sensibilities. The Wall Street Journal detailed how Yaccarino was often “out of the loop” on key product decisions and policy shifts—including major platform changes that she had to publicly defend without notice.


She was brought in to do one job: bring back advertisers. And while there were moments of progress, brands like Apple and Disney ultimately paused or pulled ads from the platform over Musk’s controversial posts and lax content moderation.

A December 2023 report from Media Matters showed that X lost over 60% of its top advertisers in under a year. For a platform that earns the bulk of its revenue through ads, that's not a PR problem—it’s an existential one.



The Silent CEO Model Doesn’t Work


While Musk remained the de facto face of the platform—frequently posting, announcing changes, and even weighing in on geopolitical events—Yaccarino's role remained largely ceremonial. “She has no power,” one former executive told The Verge. “This was always Musk’s show.”


In interviews, Yaccarino often tried to walk a tightrope—promoting the platform to marketers while downplaying Musk’s unpredictable behavior. But that balancing act became harder to maintain.


In a particularly awkward moment at the 2023 Code Conference, Yaccarino was asked about antisemitic content and platform policies, visibly struggling to respond in real time.
