ChatGPT Is Getting a Little More Human—And That's by Design
With weekly usage poised to exceed 700 million active users, ChatGPT has become less of a novelty and more of a daily ritual. OpenAI, the company behind the AI platform, is now taking steps to temper that usage—yes, really.
The company announced that new mental health–focused features are being integrated into the app to promote healthier digital habits. These features include pop-up reminders to take breaks during extended chat sessions, as well as systems that detect signs of emotional or mental distress and gently guide users to pause or seek help.
This development represents a notable evolution in how AI is being used: not just to inform or automate, but to intervene for well-being—without stepping into the role of a therapist.
The Usage Stats Are Getting… Alarming
Since March 2025, when ChatGPT clocked in at 500 million weekly users, growth has surged over 40%, according to Reuters. That’s a fourfold increase year-over-year.

The sheer scale of this increase has caught the attention of researchers concerned with AI dependency. According to the American Psychological Association, prolonged engagement with generative AI tools can cause mental fatigue, especially if users are substituting real human interaction with AI.
“There’s nothing artificial about the emotional impact of AI overuse,” says Dr. Jean Twenge, psychologist and author of iGen. “We’re seeing users blur the line between digital assistance and emotional support, which comes with risks.”
What the New Tools Actually Do
While OpenAI is careful to clarify that ChatGPT is not a mental health provider, the app is being modified to gently detect behavioral red flags. These could include signs of anxiety, sadness, or prolonged activity without rest.
If flagged, users may receive a reminder like:
“You’ve been chatting for a while. How about taking a short break?”
OpenAI says it is also partnering with outside mental health organizations, including Crisis Text Line and Mental Health America, to ensure users in distress are pointed toward human resources, not just code.
The goal? Encourage better boundaries with AI tools, while still supporting productivity and learning.
Mental Health Experts Support the Shift
The decision comes amid a wave of concern around digital overuse. A 2024 survey from Pew Research Center found that 1 in 5 U.S. adults report using AI tools like ChatGPT for emotional companionship, not just for information.
This includes students, freelancers, and even entrepreneurs who use ChatGPT to offload decision fatigue. While that might sound efficient, researchers warn it can result in emotional outsourcing—relying on AI to validate choices or moods.
Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett, neuroscientist and author of How Emotions Are Made, explains:
“AI doesn’t feel—but it can simulate empathy well enough that users can forget it’s a simulation. That’s where the emotional risk begins.”
Encouraging Healthier AI Habits
With AI tools embedded in everything from sales platforms to mental wellness apps, the line between tool and companion is getting fuzzier. Apple’s recent iOS 18 features include mental health tracking. Meta and Google are also investing in emotion-aware AI systems.
OpenAI's additions appear to be a soft preventative measure, aimed at helping users stay engaged without spiraling into dependence.

So Is AI the Next Therapist? Not Exactly.
Even as ChatGPT starts offering rest reminders and emotional nudges, OpenAI is clear: this isn’t therapy. It’s more like your smartwatch telling you to stand up—only now, it’s your chatbot telling you to close the tab for a minute.
This shift is a tacit acknowledgment of a broader responsibility: as AI tools take on more space in users' daily lives, emotional hygiene matters.
